Established in 2002, the Community One Stop Shop (COSS) is situated in the heart of Broomhouse, Edinburgh, an area affected by poverty and deprivation.

The overall aim of the organisation is to alleviate the effects of poverty and support people through crisis situations.

What we do

Advice: Our advice service is mainly delivered from Monday – Thursday, 9am-3pm on an appointment basis, and through our drop-in on Fridays 9am-12pm. We also have additional services including specialist advice for our Black and Ethnic Minority (BME) clients, and Wednesday evening advice appointments which are supported by CHAI (Community Help and Advice Initiative).

Employability: We offer one-to-one employability support to local residents. This is a tailored service and we aim to work with our clients to ensure they get the information and guidance they need; for example CV Writing, completing college applications and job searches.

Food Bank: We operate a self-referral food bank, this means that our clients do not have to obtain a referral from a professional in order to access the food bank. This ensures that we can provide support to people who may not be accessing other services, or do not have the ability to request a referral.

Outreach: We are currently developing our outreach portfolio. We deliver our primary services, Advice and the Food Bank at the Calder’s Community Flat in Edinburgh. The Calder’s is one of the most deprived areas in the city, with over 50% of residents living in poverty. We aim to ensure that everyone who needs advice can access it, regardless of their circumstances.

Ancillary Services: We offer ancillary services, these include C-Card, Credit Union, and Holiday support programmes in local schools.

Funders: We would like to thank our funders for supporting our work and enabling us to make a difference in the local community.

Partners: We would like thank our partner organisations for their continued support, we hope to maintain these working relationships. In 2017/2018 we worked with over 20 different organisations, from universities to supermarkets.

2017-2018 has been an outstanding year for the project with some fantastic achievements and positive outcomes for our clients. The introduction of our outreach project and the development of our existing services has strengthened our brand and made us an integral part of our local community.
